Aligning Marketing Strategy with Business Goals

“A lack of a clear, well-defined strategy is often the root cause of marketing efforts falling short, leading to misalignment with business goals and wasted resources.” — Ian Kirk, DesignRush

You might be surprised to learn how many small & medium enterprises (SMEs) we encounter that don’t have clear objectives. Many still approach marketing on an ad-hoc basis and/or implement short-term marketing strategies that — while they may deliver a quick boost — often clash with their business goals and are counterproductive.

As a result of marketing misalignment, these tactics will never deliver the returns you would see from a true long-term marketing strategy — one that requires a much deeper understanding of marketing your offering, audience, positioning and messaging. This is the kind of strategy required to power growth and it requires a level of marketing expertise few SME owners possess.

As a business owner, at the bare minimum, you need to have thought through and documented the following:

A Business Plan that includes these 6 BASICS:
1) Your objectives (what is your offering and your goal / vision of where your business is heading)
2) Your Target Audience (for whom)
3) Your purpose and value proposition (all the why’s)
4) Your business strategy (your current state/Mission which guides your everyday decisions)
5) Your marketing strategy and how it advances your objectives (how you plan to reach your audience and what channels you will use to reach them and how this advances your business objectives)
6) How you will measure success (your objectives translated into concrete results, i.e. numbers)

If you’re not seeing the marketing results you need and feel as if you’re spinning your wheels and getting nowhere, ask yourself what your objectives are. Consider preparing a Sales and Marketing Brief that contains all the above information, and book a strategy review with Fetch.
